The Power of Women!
Today I open up my blog with a powerful talking point, a point that has been so heightened through the publicity and social media recently that we no longer know what is acceptable and what not when it comes to displaying images of ourselves which include dressing. Yes I’m talking about exploitation of young and vulnerable women and girls.
Over the past decade there has been much controversy on this subject and particularly on ‘if what you wear effects how others view you?’ If you display small amounts of flesh should the opposite gender take this as an invitation? Or do we have the right to wear as little or as much as we want? Both arguments could be given. When we have such negative influences such as Miley Cyrus posted all over our television wearing nothing but a thong and well, let’s face it, nipple tassels. It’s not so hard to see where the confusion stems from.
But is it fair, we ask, when a young lady simply minding her own business whist walking in her own neighbourhood receives inappropriate remarks from men who presume that it is acceptable and a compliment? Be it a shout from a car window, a honk, a whistle or invasion of personal space. She could be wearing a bin liner for all we know, not seeking any attention yet still being made to feel uncomfortable in her own skin… Is this acceptable? HELL NO! What happened to freedom for women?
This is what should truly be highlighted in the media. We need to pinpoint what I call ‘Verbal Sexual Abuse’ cases. Verbal harassment is equally as damaging as physical harassment (e.g a grope). Stand up for vulnerable women and put a stop to it!
Don’t let what you wear impact your life. There should be more focus on showing young boys what is appropriate and not, and when enough is enough, when to restrain themselves and respect our women’s personal space?
I leave this with you today, it’s a little different but important! So please if you have any views upon this subject I would love to hear them
